The Season is half over!!!
The season is half over and I have not killed a turkey. The weather has not been good for hunting, nothing but rain for me at least. I have been hunting in two states, Connecticut and Massachusetts. On the days I have off the rain has be relentless.

I have been bow hunting on public land and have seen only a couple of turkeys. I have heard some gobbles at first light but then they don't respond to the calls after they fly down. One of the drawbacks to hunting public land is that the turkeys become call shy. I have also seen very few other hunters. I have always thought that turkey hunters are fair weather hunters.
This is one of the hardest seasons I have had. The two states that I'm hunting in said that there are many more turkeys this year than last year. There are many turkeys but they are spread out and are not gobbling. There are a lot hens out there competing for the Tom's attention.
I have heard some hens but not seen any. When I don't see hens I think that they are sitting on their nest. The hunting season in the two states I hunt starts in May. I feel that that by then the season has passed. The Hens are all bread and the Toms are not looking for love any more. This is one of those situations where you are asking yourself, what could I do to make a difference. I have been getting a lot more aggressive as it comes to moving in on the turkeys. I have had some positive results, I have seen more turkeys.

When it is not raining the land is flooderd and looks nice. This is an open field I like to hunt in. The field is under a foot of water.
I did have three Toms that were gobbling like mad one morning but they came in to about 80 yards and were run off by a coyote. This is one of my toughest season I have ever had. I will not be giving up I have a week and a half to go.
I hope that you are having better luck then me.
