Turkey season is over.
I
have had the hardest season I have ever had.
This is not because my alarm went off a 3am or because the
mosquitoes and ticks were everywhere. The season started out cool
and rainy and stayed that way most of the season.
It seemed to rain on every day I had off.
I also had some problems with birds being run off by coyotes.
When the season was half way over, I did get a change. I got to my setup well before first light. I did some real soft calling. When I didn’t get any gobbles back I thought that it would be another long day in the blind. The temperature was 42 degrees with a light wind. As the sun started to rise it warmed up and the birds started to gobble. This got my blood pumping.
I started to call back and then there was more
than one bird
gobbling back. Then they flew down right behind my blind. I got my
bow in my hand and checked the arrow to insure that it was right on
the bow. To my left
three long beard birds were three feet away from the blind.
I thought they could hear my heart beating.
With the birds that close they could look right into the blind. I could not move at all. They saw the Jake decoy and went right to it. This was my chance. I drew back my bow and they started to putt. They didn’t run off but they knew something was wrong. It was too late. I had the bow drawn back. I put my 20 yard pin on the bird to my right. I shot and could not believe that the arrow went to the right and high. I missed!! I couldn’t believe it. The only bird that I have seen all season and I missed it.
The last day was great. The birds where gobbling like mad. I got one gobbling at every call I made. I was not far from the border of the state land and I was trying to call the bird off the private land. I could see him at 150 yards away. I could not move in on him without him seeing me or without moving off the public land. I did try to parallel the state land to move into a new spot. The problem was there was a swamp there and he was not going to the cross the swap. It turned out that he just didn’t want to come over.
I will be scouting hard this upcoming summer for deer. I will also be doing some woodchuck hunting this summer. I also have some reviews on some great products and a video review. I have a lot of fun hunting. It was not my year to kill a bird.
This is my second season without a bird. Next year will be better.
I hope that your season was better than mine.
Good luck
Sean
