Broadheads are probably that most critical elements for a hunt. The broadhead does all the work in killing game. The right broadhead can be the difference between a clean kill and a lost deer.
There are some key elements that all good broadheads should have. A broadhead must have very sharp blades. It must be strong and well built. Each broadhead must weigh the same. Also the broadhead must fly like a field point.
We
will be taking a look at the Tekan 2 Broadhead made by
G5 Outdoors.
This is a
mechanical broad head. A mechanical broadhead will have the
blade system folded into the shaft. The broadhead is designed
so that the blades will deploy or open when it hits the animal.
The Tekan 2 broadhead has some very unique
designs. First, the blades do not fold out like other
broadheads. They slide down the outside of the broadhead.
As they slide down the blades move into the right position.
This takes a lot less energy to deploy the blades. The
other big design advantage is the unique tip. The Tekan 2
has a 1/2 inch cutting head that is 90 degrees of the replaceable
blades.
This gives the broadhead more cutting
surface
and like
the
chisel head it can break though bones.
The
broadhead also uses the best features from other broadheads.
This tip cuts and also breaks through the bones.
The next important element of any broadhead is
how tough it is. A broadhead has to hold up to the forces that
occur as it hits the animal. We tested
this by shooting the broadhead into a plywood board. We shot
into a 1/2 inch plywood board at 20 yards. The shot was
placed near the
edge of the board in case we had to cut it out. It turned out we
didn't
have to cut it out because it went straight through the wood. The blades also
opened and cut through the plywood as seen in the photo. What you can't see is that
the arrow went 10 inches into the ground after it passed though the
board. This is the first
mechanical broadhead that we have tested that survived this test.
Most times the broadhead is all bent and broken. You can see
in the photo below how the it survived the test in useable shape.
The blades went though the plywood without any problem. The tip was scraped up but not broken. Both blades were intact. This broadhead is ready to go back into the woods with new blades. To give you an idea about the forces in play, the carbon arrow was chrushed where the broadhead screwed into the arrow.
Another key element of any good broadhead are the blades. We saw in the plywood test how tough the blades are. There are many broadsheads that would not hold up to this kind of test. The other key element is how sharp the blades are. The blades are very sharp. One great design element is the option you have to replace the blades. The broadhead comes with 15/16 inch cutting diameter which is great for any hunting, but you can install blades that have a 1.5 inch cutting diameter. This gives you the flexability to have different cutting diameters for different animals. the 1.5 inch cutting diameter would be great for turkeys. The blades can cut through wing or hip bones and still cut through the vitals.
The last key element to any good broadhead is the way it flies. All of the broadheads must weigh the same. If there is even 10 grains difference in the weight of each broadhead you will not get a good grouping of your arrows. In order to have good broadhead flight all of the broadheads must weigh the same. The Tekan 2 all weigh the same regardless whether they are100 or 125 grains. The Tekan 2 flies like a field point but delivers the killing power that is needed when hunting big game.
The Tekan 2 also has the easiest blades to change.
Most broadheads
on the market take some force
to replace the blades. Applying the force necessary to change
the blades can be dangerous. To change the blades on the
Tekan 2 all that is required is the loosening of the broadhead
on the arrow. Next you lower the washer at the base of the
broadhead and slide
down the O-ring. The blades are ready to
be removed. With two fingers, grab the side of the blade and carefully
slide it down the side of the broadhead. The blade will slide
down and it will come right out. To replace the blades simply
slide the new one in place. When the two blades are replaced, put in
the O-ring and tighten the broadhead onto the arrow. The blades can
be changed in 30 seconds.
The Tekan 2 is a great all around broadhead. It will work fine with most animals that you will be hunting for in North American. The only draw back is that there are only 2 blades. I have talked to a lot of you out there who tell me that you need that third or fourth blade to open the wound. This is where the design of the broadhead comes into play. With the cutting tip at a 90 degree angle from the blades it will open the wound making for a fast kill and easy recovery of the animal. This broadhead also comes out of the box with one of the biggest cutting diameters than most broadheads on the market.
The key to a successful hunt is to have a good broadhead. The Tekan 2 is the broadhead that I will be using for turkey hunting this year. I will install the larger blades and I will be in the turkey woods with them.
Good Luck
